The best way to keep your heart healthy? Cardio. Some of us really dreaded those days in school of doing laps and completely swore off running. It isn’t that we don’t mind working up a sweat, it’s that there should be better ways to get that heart pumping without going around in a never ending circle. I mean c’mon, we do spend our entire lives doing that at work!

If you ever used a cardio machine at the gym you know just how much more interesting forms of getting your heart rate up there are instead of hitting the treadmill. Legs don’t own a monopoly on cardio, there are actually a bunch of ways to get that heart pumping! What better way to explore the world of cardio than with Flyweight, the resistant weight that promises major league conditioning, everytime.

In this review we will see if the Flyweight is a new way to enjoy a high intensity cardio workout or just deadweight.

The Product

Innovation

Is this a truly new product that you can’t find on the market? Or this is a product that defines an entirely new product category. In some cases, combining several features into one or introducing a new feature to an old product is also considered an innovation.

The Flyweight is a set of interlocking weights that can be interlocked in 8 ways for an endless variety of exercises. It’s a bar, it’s a hammer, it can even look like a Bop-It that hit the gym. It looks super simple but spending hours scouring the internet for a similar product and you will realize this really is a one-of-a-kind weight.

It can act as a row machine, ski machine, medicine ball, and hammer, for you to swing around and work up a sweat. Machines are great at giving you one-way resistance, think pulling on a row machine, but fail to do much for the opposite muscle group. You can work out all of your muscle groups moving the Flyweight in one direction than bringing it back, a much more efficient way to get your heart pumping.

You may be thinking, Can’t I just do this with a regular dumbbell or kettlebell? They are not built for movement, and they are not adaptable to your workout. Flyweight isn’t so much about the weight itself, but all of the extra gains you can make with more efficient workouts.

This may not look like the most advanced piece of workout equipment, but if you want the benefit of a variety of workouts without investing in an entire home gym, Flyweight is definitely something to look into.

Competitiveness

How much better is it than the competition? Is it faster? Bigger? Cooler? More affordable? There needs to be a solid reason why you should back this project over any other.

Versatility isn’t very common in fitness equipment. It is much more common to find some niche piece of equipment for a specific exercise but very few can pull off a jack of all trades. If you need to keep things interesting, doing the same lifts and cardio can get boring real quick, especially at home.

Unless you are made of stick and bones, you probably are not considering the  Flyweight to build serious mass since it only comes in at 9 or 12 pounds, which is perfect for cardio but doesn’t give you much room to get into lifting with it. But if you think 9 pounds is too little for even cardio, you clearly haven’t ever had to move weight around for more than 30 seconds.

Most other obscure workout equipment is built to be more ergonomic but lacks much versatility outside of just slapping more weight on it. The only comparable thing to Flyweight would be some resistance bands but you still need something to loop them around to provide resistance and they still would only be working out one side of your muscle group.

The Team

Reliability

How capable is the team? Have they developed something like this before? Do they have crowdfunding experience? Manufacturing experience? A lot of campaigns fail to deliver their product because they don’t know what they’re doing.

This isn’t the xChain team’s first rodeo. The Founder, Matt Feinman, is a lawyer by day and fitness enthusiast by night. He saw there was a need for reaching higher levels of fitness, and realized the enormous benefits of conditioning day because it wasn’t about lifting the maximum weight.

They had a similar product called the xChain that tried to tackle the same issue but was more of a chain than an interlocking system of weights. They launched a campaign in 2018 and got 370 backers to pledge more than $80k, which is great for a first-time crowdfunding project.

They did deliver their xChain to backers and posted updates along the way. They already have their mass production completed and are waiting to start their campaign to start getting their shipping orders ready.
Since this isn’t the most complex product, there shouldn’t be any big hiccups expected, especially when they have made a similar product and delivered.

We also see that xChain has done lab testing to see just how much more effective it is having dual resistance during a workout. Improving on a product and seeing how much more can be achieved with dual resistance training really shows commitment to the idea. And the results do speak for themselves.

Attitude

How transparent are the campaigners? Do they give their backers valuable updates on their progress? Do they engage with their backers? Crowdfunding is all about community, sharing information, and building meaningful relationships with the people who fund your project.

While the campaign wasn’t live yet, we had a previous campaign to judge, and things are looking good. Some of the updates are for backers only, which is normal, but we can see that they kept their backers updated throughout the process and the comments are overall positive. We can’t find any red flags.

What is great is that their xchain.training website has the workouts available so you can see just what workouts you can expect when you get your Flyweight.

Conclusion

Who would have thought an entire home gym set could be substituted with such a simple piece of exercise equipment. Don’t think of this as just buying another piece of  conditioning equipment. The Flyweight is designed to be efficient not only for your workout, but for space in your “home gym”,  or storage closet.

Are you ready to experience dual resistance?
